TOEFL
What is TOEFL?
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most popular English Language Proficiency tests. Administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS), the test is currently available only as an Internet-based format in Nepal.
The TOEFL is taken for various reasons, including:
- Education at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level
- To qualify for certain scholarships
- For employment purposes
- For getting a visa or residence in English speaking countries
The four skills tested in the test are:
- Reading
- Listening
- Writing
- Speaking
A student is required to combine these four communication skills to perform a specific task during the test. For example:
- Read, Listen and then speak as a response to a specific question.
- Listen and then answer the specific question through speaking.
- Read, Listen and then provide response to a specific question in the form of Writing.
The test is formatted in following manner:

TOEFL scores are calculated on scaled section ranging from 0-30 and you will also receive a total score out of 120, which is calculated by adding up your scaled section scores. You will receive the official scores as long as you do the following:
- Answer at least one question each in Reading and Listening sections.
- Write at least one essay.
- Complete at least one speaking test.
